Knock On Wood. What can’t you say about this iconic song? It’s got a fatback Memphis groove that’s never been topped, great interplay between the horns and guitar and a vocal that floats over the whole thing like it’s just meant to be. KOW has got to be in the running for the best soul song of all time. An interesting bit of trivia: Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper wrote this for Otis Redding, but initially he didn’t like it, so Eddie did it himself.
My Girl. One of the most best songs to ever come out of Motown, and the most well-known song by The Temptations. The band gives it a bit of a different spin here, taking its cue from a version Otis Redding recorded so the horns are more up front. Sam S. on vocals really tears it up on this one in a very memorable performance.
I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now). A classic Otis Redding ballad, this song has everything: soulful melody and lyrics, a great feel throughout and some soaring horns. This one will tear your heart out — if you have any soul…
Respect. Many are surprised to find out that this is also an Otis Redding composition. We’re doing Aretha’s version here (because, frankly, it’s better) but this song is more comfortably sung by a male if you listen to the lyrics. Sam does a great job on it, as does the rest of the band. This is another song that’s hard to sit still on. So what are you waiting for? Get up and dance!
